Navman
The Navman website www.navman.com.au has to one of the worst sites structures I've ever seen. I was recently given an Navman S50 which is a great little unit except that if you want to apply SP1 software update to the Navman then good luck.
Any time you try to install the update SP1 you'll b e met with "you need to have NavDesk installed in order to install this update" I Already have NavDesk2008 installed!
So i go to log a support issue on the website to be met with
My god.. this website sucks.
and no i haven't founf a solution to the problem yet but I'll let you know when I do.

Why do we have to put up with the same 4 channels?
So these days anyone with access to digital TV gets the benefit of better quality pictures and better sound but also a lot more channels. Or so we think.
Yes there are channels like SBS 2 and ABC 2 but then take a look at the major commercial TV channels most have a HD and a few SD channels which seems great until you realise most of the this extra channels only play the same programs.
For example 7-1234 & 7HD pretty much act as one channel. WHY! This seems pointless to me. You have access to 4 channels but realistically only use one.
I hear that this is up for review in 2009 from the government

Max Payne - This is going to suck.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say this movie is going to suck. Why?
- It's PG-13
- Mark Wahlberg
Don't get me wrong hes cool guy and stuff, I just cannot see him as a dark brooding Max Payne.
- Using words like this to describe it
Source: Total Film talks exclusively to Mark Wahlberg about his role in the upcoming Max Payne movie
- It's PG-13
“Just because it might be PG-13, doesn’t mean there won’t be action and excitement."

- Using words like this to describe it
"There was no need for me to drop the ‘F’-bomb, y’know? John and I just made sure that Max has an arsenal of weapons and cool dialogue – which is far more powerful than just cussing all the time. "

The formula for a catchy news subject
Something something something harmful something something something studies suggest
Which incidently is the same formula for good starwars dialogue.
"Something something something Dark Side Something something something Jedi's"
source: Family Guy.
Don't bother offering any 'actual proof' to back up your claims all you have to do to make something catchy is add the words 'studies suggest' to the end of your news.
Take this real life example:
Eating a poor diet when pregnant or breastfeeding may cause long-lasting health damage to the child, animal studies suggest.
source: BBC News
and BTW did they really need to study this to find this out? You are what you eat. So if you eat crap your going to feel like crap.

Ubuntu
I've been using Ubuntu for about 7-8 months now.. the previous release to Hardy Herron was great... i log on i do some work i play a game and i test stuff and 99% of the time it worked... constant updates from ubuntu were great as well. I was very impressed. add functionality to Ubuntu was made even easy by using the Add/Remove applications program... simply search for what you want and then install.
I was living the Linux dream or at least i was until i tried t upgrade to 8.04 Hardy Herron.
First i tried the in line upgrade... it went smooth right up to 90% and then said there is an error and if you reboot your pretty much going to have a stuffed PC. (which turned out to be true i could not longer log on to ubuntu after rebooting)
So I downloaded the ISO from IINET and installed from CD. Great! it worked but I've lost all my previous configuration and programs.
then i tried to install a flash plugin for Ubuntu.. GRRRRR more frustration.
80% through the install is halted the GUI and i had to reboot and try again except this time I was not able to to run the installer because the installer database had become corrupt. Lucky Hardy Herron in the error message told me what to do (buggered if they couldn't actually program it to do that for me though). Open a terminal and type DPKG --Configure -A.... errr you do not have enough rights to do this. GRRRr. OK so I'll SU to root... Errr no can do...
turns out through using the help the correct way to repair the installed DB is to open terminal and type SUDO DPKG --Configure -A (SU for that command only).
After going through all that Hardy is now running OK. So far. I think. heck I'm not a Linux user.

Giving Proper Feedback
When asked to give a customer feedback survey make sure that you answer all sections with due care that it deserves... for example when IINET asks you to submit "Any Suggestions" feel free to fill out the form like so.
Waiting for Telstra to port a line over to IINET is like being held hostage (not that I have been) you’re stuck where you are for a period of time and given hardly any information other than the Telstra guy is set to be there between 1 and 5 pm and if this bus drops blow 5 its going to blow up. Where is Neo when you need him? Oh that's right he's at George St cinemas... Reminds me I should invite him over for a beer some time.

Explorer Crashing When Clicking on Video Files.
If your explorer.exe crashes when you click on some video files its probably because you have an older version of Xvid codec installed.
The problem is the that newer Xvid files don't make calls to the Xvid.dll anymore but if you have an older Xvid codec installed it will still try to launch and hence the crash.
Just installing the new version of Xvid codec won't help you need to un-install all older versions of the Xvid codec and just install the newest Xvid codec.

Why I ended upon the floor
I tried to play a bit of a drinking game. The game wasn't really the problem its was the program we chose to play it with, Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares.
Basically every time Gordon swore we took a drink...
I was out cold before the first ad-break.

A Simple One - Keyboard shortcuts.
Most people these days are use to highlighting text to make changes to something.
If you hold down CTRL + SHIFT and then use the arrow keys you can highlight a word at a time not just individual letters. Give it a go.

Sometimes things are not worth listing on Ebay.
If you have a household full of crap like I do.. You tend to hoard things and not chuck them out. When your forced to chuck a few things out its often better to try and sell them on Ebay. But then again there are still things that people do not want to buy... like Hair Trimmers and tiny PS2 NumberPad Keyboards.
Oh well. at least some of my computer gear still sells well on ebay. Wireless access point went for 60$ and its over 2 years old. WOOT!

First Post For 2008
I don't really have much to say its starting to get busy around the joejoeinc household there are parties to organise (No thanks corey I do not need your help, you loser). Things to be setup for the engagement party.
I did come across this nice news story and thought it is worth a mention on my smal blog.
Photo Clues Lead to Camera's Owner
I've recently put a desposit on this Samsung TV which i'm hoping to buy real soon. You see we've lost the TV in our house and want to replace it. My thinking is we replace it with something decent. I'm insisting on a good TV here as to try and semi future proof it for when DVD players are dead and HD stuff is the norm (3-5 years).
Anyway I'd better get back to work.
